Dive with Thresher Sharks!

Join us for a week of diving with thresher sharks at Malapascua in the Philippines. Monad Shoal is the ONLY place in the world where pelagic thresher sharks can be reliably encountered day after day.

Each morning, just after sunrise, pelagic thresher sharks rise from the depths to be cleaned by reef fishes. Up to a dozen or so sharks can sometimes be seen cautiously approaching the cleaning stations and then stalling in the water column with their long tails pointing slightly downwards in an unmistakable signal that they are ready for the cleaner fishes to attend them. Lucky divers may even see a bigeye thresher shark swimming among their pelagic cousins. Monad Shoal is a very unique dive site that you have to see to believe.

And, enjoy a week of World Class Reef Diving in the Visayan Sea.

Enjoy six magical days of diving on the amazing soft and hard coral reefs around Malapascua and its surrounding islands. Take the opportunity to do up to 20 dives throughout the week. Remember to bring a macro lens because many of these dives will focus on the classic species that this region of the world is famous for. Expect to see pygmy seahorses, blue-ringed octopuses, ornate ghost pipefish, mating mandarinfish and a myriad of other exotic species.

JUST A FEW OF MALAPASCUA'S WORLD CLASS DIVE SITES:

Thresher shark

Monad Shoal

Thresher Shark Central! Monad is an underwater island on the edge of a 200m drop off, and is famous as the only place in the world where thresher sharks can be seen everyday. Giant manta rays are a common sight year round and the shoal attracts other pelagics such as devil rays and eagle rays. Monad Shoal is best dived on Nitrox to increase bottom times with the sharks.

Diver on the wreck of the Dona Marilyn

Dona Marilyn Wreck

The Dona Marilyn was a Cebu-Manila passenger ferry that sank in a typhoon over 20 years ago. It was a huge disaster and many people lost their lives. The wreck is around 100m long, and now lying on its starboard side, amazingly still all in one piece. Long lost fishing nets encrusted in coral are draped all over it.
Marble rays, blue-spotted rays and whitetip sharks live under the bow and eagle rays and devil rays sometimes pass through. The wreck is covered in a healthy growth of soft coral, and the resident fish grow to a large size. Expect large cuttlefish and scorpionfish are common as well as nudibranchs and flatworms. A giant moray eel is living in the wreck. You can also see many of the beautiful purple fire sea urchins, accompanied by their resident zebra crabs and Coleman's shrimp. Penetration is possible for qualified divers. There is lots to see inside as it has remained unsalvaged.

CuttlefishWhitespotted Bamboo Shark Malapascua

Gato Island

They say that "You come to Malapascua to see the thresher sharks, but you leave remembering Gato". Gato is a marine reserve and sea snake sanctuary. It has at least five dive sites with a huge diversity of marine life.

At all sites you can see such things as banded sea snakes, cuttlefish (often while mating), seahorses, nudibranchs, frogfish, scorpion fish, porcupine fish, and smashing mantis shrimp. Away from the reef you can see schools of squid and big-mouthed mackerel attracted by the baitballs. There are many whitetip sharks in residence at Gato, as well as bamboo and cat sharks. The coral is in good condition and the rocky island has many interesting underwater rock formations, overhangs, and swim-through's.

courting manadarinfishes

Lighthouse Reef

A shallow site (usually dived at night) where psychedelic mandarinfish are guaranteed. Do not miss the exotic mating dance of the male and his adoring females.
We regularly see seahorses, scribbled and banded pipefish, juvenile sweetlips, banded sea snakes, colorful nudibranchs, many varieties of shrimp and occasional blue-ringed octopus and frogfish.

Chocolate Island reef, Malapascua

Chocolate Island

A beautiful shallow dive site and a macro photographer’s delight. The healthy soft coral is home to a large variety of life including sea snakes, snake eels, moray eels, cuttlefish (including flamboyants), seamoths (Pegasus), large crabs and juvenile batfish.

Macro subjects includes scores of different nudibranchs, flatworms, cleaner and coral shrimps, shells and cowries. Flatworms are common and if you are lucky you will see them performing their jaw-droppingly beautiful shimmery mating ritual!

Nudibranch at Butong Bato

Butong Bato

Bugtong Bato is an underwater pinnacle, very near Malapascua. There is a large school of batfish is residence as well as squid, mackerel, nudis, scorpionfish, lionfish, zebra crabs and whip coral shrimp.

Pygmy seahorse in Malapascua

Calanggaman Island

A beautiful wall dive where you can often find large pelagic schooling fishes as well as macro subjects such as the beautiful white mushroom coral pipefish, ornate ghost pipefish and candy crabs. And, the very special Denise Pygmy seahorse which are often in residence on the Calangamman's enormous orange sea fans.
