Devil Ray Diving

Dive with Blues and Makos in the Azores

During the late summer months, blue and mako sharks congregate at the Azores as part of their long annual migration through the North Atlantic. Join us in August when the sharks are at their thickest for an edgy encounter in the cobalt blue water off Pico Island.

This is a blue water dive in crystal clear water at the very edge of the Azorean shelf. As there are no reference points except for the line to the dive boat, good buoyancy skills are very important!

Dive with Devil Rays at Princess Alice Bank

As well as great shark diving, the Azores also provides access to world famous Princess Alice Bank; a deep seamount far from shore inhabited by huge Pelagic Mobula Rays aka Devil Rays.

Unlike smaller mobulas that bolt at the sight of divers, this species is extremely friendly and curious, allowing divers to swim right next to them within touching distance. Swimming within a school of mobula rays that are up to 3.7m wide from wing tip to wing tip, is an experience you will never forget.

Snorkel with Dolphins

We will also take a day off from diving to snorkel with pods of dolphins. Among the species we may encounter are Common, Bottlenose, Atlantic Spotted, Risso and Striped Dolphins.

Dive The Volcanic Reefs of Pico Island

No trip to the Azores would be complete without a dive or two on its rugged volcanic reefs. Expect surge sculpted caves, dramatic drop offs and a plethora of endemic marine life including octopuses, morays, barracudas, nudibranchs and more.

Day 3 - After a quick breakfast we will set a course for Princess Alice Banks (weather permitting). Returning by late afternoon in time for dinner on Pico.

Day 4 - Today you will have a chance to dive the volcanic reefs around Pico Island. After two tanks we will return to shore and spend the afternoon relaxing.

Day 6 - Your second expedition to Princess Alice Bank. One more chance to swim among the mobulas and explore this mysterious deep seamount.

Day 8 - Time to say goodbye to Pico Island. After breakfast we will transfer you to the airport for you trip home.

NB. the schedule may be rearranged slightly to take advantage of the best weather days to head to Princess Alice Bank.
